Eurovision week

Tonight is the first of the semi finals for Eurovision. Just in case you have no idea what I'm talking about, Eurovision, or to use it's full name - The Eurovision Song Contest is an annual competition held among many of the active member countries of the European Broadcasting Union[1]. This year we'll all be celebrating some of the best kitsch of the year. This competion has in the past produced a number of outstanding performances. It launched the carrier of ABBA. Celine Dion competed on behalf of Switzerland in 1988 with the song "Ne partez pas sans moi", which subsequently helped launch her international career[2]. It even inspired a net meme in the form of the sax guy. Check out the original:

Just to make it clear. I don't enjoy Eurovision for the amazing music or the quality of the songs. With just a few exceptions like this one. I actually thought this was OK...back in 1996

A song performed by an Australian - Gina G - and strangely enough, Eurovision is apparently quite popular in Australia. But for me Eurovision also marks the start of the summer party season. It's one of the first evenings when it's potentially warm enough to enjoy being outside. We're already enjoying nearly 24 hour daylight, but it's still freezing at night and it's literally still snowing on the north side of the country.
